Emerging contaminants (ECs) are increasingly recognized as a global threat to biodiversity and ecosystem health. However, the cumulative risks posed by ECs to aquatic organisms and ecosystems, as well as the influence of anthropogenic activities and natural factors on these risks, remain poorly understood. This study assessed the mixed risks of ECs in Dongting Lake, a Ramsar Convention-classified Typically Changing Wetland, to elucidate the major EC classes, key risk drivers, and magnitude of anthropogenic and natural impacts. Results revealed that ECs pose non-negligible acute (30% probability) and chronic (70% probability) mixed risks to aquatic organisms in the freshwater lake ecosystem, with imidacloprid identified as the primary pollutant stressor. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) indicated that cropland and precipitation were major drivers of EC contamination levels and ecological risk. Cropland was positively associated with EC concentrations, while precipitation exhibited a dilution effect. These findings provide critical insights into the ecological risk status and key risk drivers in a typical freshwater lake ecosystem, offering data-driven support for the control and management of ECs in China.

The structure and the chemical composition of individual layers as well as of interfaces belonging to the two heterostructures M1 (BaFe12O19/YbFeO3/YSZ) and M2 (YbFeO3/BaFe12O19/YSZ) grown by pulsed laser deposition on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates are deeply characterized by using a combination of methods such as high-resolution X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic-resolution scanning TEM with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The temperature-dependent magnetic properties demonstrate two distinct heterostructures with different coercivity, anisotropy fields, and first anisotropy constants, which are related to the defect concentrations within the individual layers and to the degree of intermixing at the interface. The heterostructure with the stacking order BaFe12O19/YbFeO3, i.e., M1, exhibits a distinctive interface without any chemical intermixture, while an Fe-rich crystalline phase is observed in M2 both in atomic-resolution EDX maps and in mass density profiles. Additionally, M1 shows high c-axis orientation, which induces a higher anisotropy constant K1 as well as a larger coercivity due to a high number of phase boundaries. Despite the existence of a canted antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic combination (T < 140 K), both heterostructures M1 and M2 do not reveal any detectable exchange bias at T = 50 K. Additionally, compressive residual strain on the BaM layer is found to be suppressing the ferromagnetism, thus reducing the Curie temperature (Tc) in the case of M1. These findings suggest that M1 (BaFe12O19/YbFeO3/YSZ) is suitable for magnetic storage applications.

The morphology and crystal structure of Pt films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)at high temperatures Tg = 900 °C was studied for four different film thicknesses varying between 10 and 70 nm. During the subsequent growth of the capping layer, the thermal stability of the Pt was strongly influenced by the Pt film's thickness. Furthermore, these later affected the film morphology, the crystal structure and hillocks size, and distribution during subsequent growth at Tg = 900 °C for a long duration. The modifications in the morphology as well as in the structure of the Pt film without a capping layer, named also as the as-grown and encapsulated layers in the bilayer system, were examined by a combination of microscopic and scattering methods. The increase in the thickness of the deposited Pt film brought three competitive phenomena into occurrence, such as 3D-2D morphological transition, dewetting, and hillock formation. The degree of coverage, film continuity, and the crystal quality of the Pt film were significantly improved by increasing the deposition time. An optimum Pt film thickness of 70 nm was found to be suitable for obtaining a hillock-free Pt bottom electrode which also withstood the dewetting phenomena revealed during the subsequent growth of capping layers. This achievement is crucial for the deposition of functional bottom electrodes in ferroelectric and multiferroic heterostructure systems.

AIM: To analyze efficacy of endoscopic lithotripsy combined with drug lithotripsy as compared with drug lithotripsy for the treatment of phytobezoars. METHODS: We collected and evaluated case records of 165 patients with phytobezoars from 2014 to 2023. And we analyzed demographic and clinical characteristics, imaging features, endoscopic features, complications of phytobezoars, and compared efficacy between endoscopic lithotripsy combined with drug lithotripsy (Group A) and drug lithotripsy (sodium bicarbonate combined with proton pump inhibitor) (Group B). RESULTS: The median age of patients with phytobezoars was 67.84 ± 4.286 years old. Abdominal pain was the most common symptom and peptic ulcers (67.5%) were the most common complication. Bezoar-induced ulcers were more frequent in the gastric angle. The success rate of phytobezoars vanishing in Group A and Group B were similar (92.3% vs. 85.1% within 48 h, 98.7% vs. 97.7% within a week), while the average hospitalization period, average hospitalization cost, second endoscopy rate, and average endoscopic operation time were significantly lower in patients in Group B than in Group A. CONCLUSION: Drug lithotripsy is the preferred effective and safe treatment option for phytobezoars. We advise that an endoscopy should be completed after 48 h for drug lithotripsy.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are increasingly recognized as pervasive environmental contaminants, primarily from their extensive application in flame retardants and plasticizers. Despite their widespread presence, the intricacies of OPE bioaccumulation within aquatic ecosystems remain poorly understood, particularly the environmental determinants influencing their distribution and the bioaccumulation dynamics across aquatic food chains. Here we show that water temperature plays a crucial role in modulating the dispersion of OPE in the aquatic environment of Poyang Lake. We quantified OPE concentrations across various matrices, uncovering levels ranging from 0.198 to 912.622 ng L-1 in water, 0.013-493.36 ng per g dry weight (dw) in sediment, 0.026-41.92 ng per g wet weight (ww) in plankton, 0.13-2100.72 ng per g dw in benthic invertebrates, and 0.31-3956.49 ng per g dw in wild fish, highlighting a pronounced bioaccumulation gradient. Notably, the intestines emerged as the principal site for OPE absorption, displaying the highest concentrations among the seven tissues examined. Among the various OPEs, tris(chloroethyl) phosphate was distinguished by its significant bioaccumulation potential within the aquatic food web, suggesting a need for heightened scrutiny. The propensity for OPE accumulation was markedly higher in benthic invertebrates than wild fish, indicating a differential vulnerability within aquatic biota. This study lays a foundational basis for the risk assessment of OPEs as emerging contaminants and underscores the imperative to prioritize the examination of bioaccumulation effects, particularly in benthic invertebrates, to inform future environmental safeguarding strategies.

The current highway waveform guardrail recognition technology has encountered problems with low segmentation accuracy and strong noise interference. Therefore, an improved U-net semantic segmentation model is proposed to improve the efficiency of road maintenance detection. The model training is guided by mixed expansion convolution and mixed loss function, while the presence of guardrail shedding is investigated by using partial mean values of gray values in ROI region based on segmentation results, while the first-order detail coefficients of wavelet transform are applied to detect guardrail defects and deformation. It has been determined that the Miou and Dice of the improved model are improved by 8.63% and 17.67%, respectively, over the traditional model, and that the method of detecting defects in the data is more accurate than 85%. As a result of efficient detection of highway waveform guardrail, the detection process is shortened and the effectiveness of the detection is improved later on during road maintenance.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers in consumer and industrial products. They have been found to have numerous exposure hazards. Recently, several OPEs have been detected in surface waters around the world, which may pose potential ecological risks to freshwater organisms. In this study, the concentration, spatial variation, and ecological risk of 15 OPEs in the Beiyun and Yongding rivers were unprecedentedly investigated by the ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) and risk quotient (RQ) method. The result showed that triethyl phosphate (TEP), tri (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) were the most abundant OPEs with average concentrations of 55.53 ng/L and 42.29 ng/L, respectively. The concentrations of OPEs in the Beiyun River are higher than in the Yongding River, and their levels were higher in densely populated and industrial areas. The risk assessment showed that there was insignificant from OPEs to freshwater organisms in these rivers (RQs <0.1). The risk was higher downstream than upstream, which was related to human-intensive industrial activities downstream in the Yongding River. The ecological risk of OPEs in surface waters worldwide was estimated by joint probability curves (JPCs), and the result showed that there was a moderate risk for tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), a low risk for trimethyl phosphate (TMP), and insignificant for other OPEs. In addition, the QSAR-ICE-SSD model was used to calculate the hazardous concentration for 5% (HC5). This result validated the feasibility and accuracy of this model in predicting acute data of OPEs and reducing biological experiments on the toxicity of OPEs. These results revealed the ecological risk of OPEs and provided the scientific basis for environmental managers.

Due to their endocrine-disrupting effects and the risks posed in surface waters, in particular by chronic low-dose exposure to aquatic organisms, phthalate esters (PAEs) have received significant attention. However, most assessments of risks posed by PAEs were performed at a selection level, and thus limited by empirical data on toxic effects and potencies. A quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) and interspecies correlation estimation (ICE) model was constructed to estimate hazardous concentrations (HCs) of selected PAEs to aquatic organisms, then they were used to conduct a multiple-level environmental risk assessment for PAEs in surface waters of China. Values of hazardous concentration for 5% of species (HC5s), based on acute lethality, estimated by use of the QSAR-ICE model were within 1.25-fold of HC5 values derived from empirical data on toxic potency, indicating that the QSAR-ICE model predicts the toxicity of these three PAEs with sufficient accuracy. The five selected PAEs may be commonly measured in China surface waters at concentrations between ng/L and µg/L. Risk quotients according to median concentrations of the five PAEs ranged from 3.24 for di(2-ethylhexhyl) phthalate (DEHP) to 4.10 × 10-3 for dimethyl phthalate (DMP). DEHP and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) had risks to the most vulnerable aquatic biota, with the frequency of exceedances of the predicted no-effect concentration (PNECs) of 75.5% and 38.0%, respectively. DEHP and DBP were identified as having "high" or "moderate" risks. Results of the joint probability curves (JPC) method indicated DEHP posed "intermediate" risk to freshwater species with a maximum risk product of 5.98%. The multiple level system introduced in this study can be used to prioritize chemicals and other new pollutant in the aquatic ecological.

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are widely used in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and are proposed to be a new generation of environmentally persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) substances that are increasingly detected in rivers and seas. However, there is a lack of in vivo data that characterize adverse responses and toxic mechanisms of LCMs on aquatic organisms. The aim of this study was to comprehensively investigate the effect of four typical LCMs on the lethality, growth, molting, and reproductive capacity of Daphnia magna (D. magna), a highly studied aquatic species in environmental toxicology. Whole body and enzymatic biomarkers (i.e., body length, chitobiase, acetylcholinesterase, antioxidant defense) were measured to assess the toxicity of LCMs. The 48 h mortality rate and observations of disrupted thorax development and inhibition of ecdysis indicate that D. magna are sensitive to LCMs exposure. Oxidative stress, impaired neurotransmission, and disruptions in molting were observed in short-term biomarker tests using LCMs. A 21 day exposure of D. magna to LCMs resulted in reduced growth, reproduction, and population intrinsic growth rate. In addition, chitobiase and 20-hydroxyecdysone, enzymes important for the molting process, were altered at 7, 14 and 21 d. This is hypothesized to be related to endocrine imbalance resulting from LCM exposure. Based on molecular docking simulations, there is evidence that LCMs bind directly to ecdysteroid receptors; this may explain the observed endocrine disrupting effects of LCMs. These data support the hypothesis that LCMs are endocrine disrupting chemicals in aquatic species, impacting the process of molting. This may subsequently lead to lower reproduction and unbalanced population dynamics.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the effect of Jiedu Fuzheng decoction (JFD) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its potential therapeutic mechanism. RESULTS: We prepared JFD-medicated serum from rats and treated NSCLC cells (A549 and NCI-H1650) with 0.5, 1, and 2 mg/mL JFD-medicated serum. CCK-8 and colony formation assays were used to detect cell proliferation. Transwell assays showed that JFD attenuated cell migration and invasion. JFD and SKL2001 (Wnt/ß-catenin activator) were simultaneously used to treat NSCLC cells to verify that JFD regulated the biological behavior of NSCLC via Wnt/ß-catenin signaling. It was found that 2 mg/mL JFD had the most significant effect on the activity of NSCLC cells. JFD attenuated proliferation and metastasis but increased the proportion of apoptotic cells. At the same time, JFD downregulated N-cadherin, vimentin and ß-catenin protein expression in cancer cells. SKL2001 could restore the improvement of JFD on proliferation, metastasis and apoptosis. CONCLUSION: This study confirmed that JFD suppressed the occurrence and development of NSCLC by regulating Wnt/ß-catenin signaling and provided a novel therapeutic scheme for NSCLC.

The objective of this study was to create a new method for delivering oral borneol (BN) drug that would improve stability. This was accomplished through microencapsulation using HiCap®100 and maltodextrin (MD), resulting in HiCap®100/MD/BN microcapsules (MCs). The HiCap®100/MD/BN MCs were evaluated in terms of encapsulation efficiency (EE%), drug loading (DL%), morphological observations, particle size distribution, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis, drug degradation rate studies, and in vitro release behavior. The effect of MCs on intestinal permeability in a rat model was assessed using the model drug "florfenicol" (FF) in single-pass intestinal perfusion (SPIP) study. The relationship between MCs and P-glycoprotein (P-gp) was further investigated in comparison with verapamil (Ver). The irritation of MCs was assessed by histological analysis. The MCs in a spherical structure with micron-scale dimensions were obtained. The EE% and DL% were (86.71 ± 0.96)% and (6.03 ± 0.32)%, respectively. MCs played a significantly protective role in drug degradation rate studies. In vitro release studies indicated that the release behavior of MCs was significantly better than BN at the three-release media, and the cumulative release rate exceeded 90% in 15 min. The SPIP studies showed that MCs significantly enhanced the absorption of FF in rats. Compared with Ver, MCs were not promoted by a single inhibition of P-gp. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE)-stained images showed that MCs had no obvious irritation and toxic effects on the intestines of rats. Thus, the preparation of HiCap®100/MD/BN MCs improves the stability of BN, which has certain scientific value for the development and application of BN, and provides unique perspectives for future BN-related researches.

We have studied the effect of platinum underlayer for two deposited thicknesses on the microstructure, crystalline quality, morphology, chemical composition, and magnetic properties as well as magnetic domain formation of BaFe12O19 (BaM) grown on YSZ(111) by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). We found that PLD platinum deposited with a thickness of 25 nm cannot withstand the dewetting phenomenon occurring during the subsequent BaM layer growth. A smooth and continuous Pt underlayer that possesses a sharp interface and omits the intermixing between the BaM and substrate was successfully achieved for a deposited Pt film thickness of 75 nm. Independent of the thickness of the deposited Pt layer, the c-axis orientation as well as coercivity Hc and the anisotropy HA fields were significantly improved due to a remarkable improvement of lattice mismatch in comparison with the BaM layer grown without a Pt underlayer on YSZ(111). By applying high-resolution X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), and atomically resolved scanning TEM imaging combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, as well as atomic and magnetic force microscopy, a comprehensive investigation of both structure and chemical composition of the deposited BaM films and their interfacial regions was performed. This study aimed to correlate the enhancement of the overall magnetic properties and of the local spin magnetic domain orientation with the modification of BaM microstructure and chemical composition at the nanometer scale due to the Pt underlayer. Finally, we attempted to understand the mechanisms that control the magnetic properties of these BaM films in order to be able to tailor them.

The onset of non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) still be in the fog. LUCAT1 is potentially capable of modulating MCL-1-involved NSCLC pathogenesis via targeting SRSF1. Also, MCL-1 can regulate Wnt/ß-catenin pathway to affect the tumorigenesis of NSCLC. Thus, this paper aims to uncover an intriguing and novel role of LUCAT1/SRSF1/MCL-1 axis in NSCLC based on Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. A549 and NCI-H1650, two cell lines of NSCLC, were used to mimic NSCLC in vitro. MCL-1 siRNA (si-MCL-1) and LUCAT1 siRNA (si-LUCAT1) were used to downregulate MCL-1 and LUCAT1 in NSCLC cells, respectively. The overexpression vector of SRSF1 based on pcDNA 3.1 was constructed to upregulate SRSF1 expression. 40 µM SKL2001 was used to activate Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. Transwell assay was used for migrative and invasive tests. The effect of LUCAT1 on tumor metastasis was verified in nude mice. MCL-1 downregulation led to the decrease of EMT, invasion, and migration in NSCLC, while Wnt/ß-catenin pathway agonist partially reversed the effects of MCL-1 downregulation. Mechanistic investigations revealed that LUCAT1 and MCL-1 mRNA were enriched in SRSF1; LUCAT1 silence decreased MCL-1, whereas SRSF1 enhancement elevated MCL-1; Importantly, SRSF1 overexpression significantly reversed MCL-1 alteration due to LUCAT1 silence. In NSCLC cells, SRSF1 overexpression offset the si-LUCAT1-induced changes, and si-MCL-1 reversed the SRSF1-induced cellular changes. Further, LUCAT1 inhibition reduced lung metastasis of cancer cells. LUCAT1 can interact with SRSF1 to regulate MCL-1 expression that targets the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway-mediated NSCLC cell migration, invasion, and EMT.

Micropollutants in water environments have attracted widespread attention, but how human and natural stressors influence the risks of micropollutants has not been comprehensively revealed. A megacity-scale study of the ecological risks of micropollutants in the surface water of Beijing, China is presented to illustrate the magnitudes of the influences of multiple anthropogenic and natural stressors. A total of 133 micropollutants representing typical land use patterns in Beijing, were quantified with the mean concentration range of ND (not detected) to 272 ng·L-1. The micropollutant concentrations in the south were obviously higher than those detected in the northern areas, and neonicotinoid pesticides showed the highest mean concentration of 311 ng·L-1. The chronic and acute risks of micropollutants to algae, invertebrates, and fishes were determined, and herbicides, organophosphorus esters, and insecticides account for the primary risks to algae, invertebrates, and fishes, respectively. The cropland and impervious cover cause the differences in the pollution and risks of micropollutants. The land use in riparian zones greater than 2 km shows a great influence on the chronic chemical risks (CCRs) for the three groups of species, indicating that too local scale does not explain the local pollution status. Climate conditions and human land use are important drivers explaining the CCRs to which various trophic levels of species are exposed. Results demonstrate that multiple categories of micropollutants pose adverse risks to freshwater in the megacity of Beijing, while climate conditions, pollution discharge, and human land use induce the chemical risk of micropollutants to aquatic organisms, and the land use in different riparian zones show different effects on the risks.

Freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem services might decline due to exposure to chemicals. However, researchers have devoted much attention to the potential risks of emerging contaminants, while placing less effort on historical pollutants, such as the surfactant, linear-alkylbenzene-sulfonate (LAS), which is a major component of widely used synthetic detergents worldwide. In this study, a multilevel risk assessment approach was used to assess risks posed by LAS to aquatic organisms, on a wide spatial scale, based on various assessment endpoints. Additionally, bottom-up approaches were used to assess contributions of LAS source discharges to aquatic environments. Concentrations of LAS in surface waters of China ranged from less than the limit of detection to 14,200 µg/L. The predicted no effect concentration (PNEC) based on adverse effects on reproduction is 15 µg/L, which is slightly less than the PNEC based on other endpoints. 99% of surface waters in Chaohu Lake and the Hai River (Ch: Haihe) were predicted to pose a risk to growth of aquatic organisms, with a protection threshold of 5% of species (HC5). Discharges of LAS were estimated using activity data and emission factors for 280 major cities in the basin. Rural domestic sources were the main source of LAS to surface waters. These outcomes provided a process for developing comprehensive management and control approaches to help researchers and policymakers effectively manage water resources affected by increasing concentrations of LAS.

Biodiversity loss is caused by intensive human activities and threatens human well-being. However, less is known about how the combined effects of multiple stressors on the diversity of internal (alpha diversity) and multidimensional (beta diversity) communities. Here, we conducted a long-term experiment to quantify the contribution of environmental stressors (including water quality, land use, climate factors, and hydrological regimes) to macroinvertebrate communities alpha and beta diversity in the mainstream of the Songhua River, the third largest river in China, from 2012 to 2019. Our results demonstrated that the alpha and beta diversity indices showed a decline during the study period, with the dissimilarity in community composition between sites decreasing significantly, especially in the impacted river sections (upper and midstream). Despite overall improvement in water quality after management intervention, multiple human-caused stressors still have led to biotic homogenization of macroinvertebrate communities in terms of both taxonomic and functional diversities in the past decade. Our study revealed the increased human land use explained an important portion of the variation of diversities, further indirectly promoting biotic homogenization by changing the physical and chemical factors of water quality, ultimately altering assemblage ecological processes. Furthermore, the facets of diversity have distinct response mechanisms to stressors, providing complementary information from the perspective of taxonomy and function to better reflect the ecological changes of communities. Environmental filtering determined taxonomic beta diversity, and functional beta diversity was driven by the joint efforts of stressors and spatial processes. Finally, we proposed that traditional water quality monitoring alone cannot fully reveal the status of river ecological environment protection, and more importantly, we should explore the continuous changes in biodiversity over the long term. Meanwhile, our results also highlight timely control of nutrient input and unreasonable expansion of land use can better curb the ecological degradation of rivers and promote the healthy and sustainable development of floodplain ecosystems.

To improve the solubility and stability of resveratrol (Res), Res nanocrystals (Res-ncs) as the capsule core were prepared by wet milling using hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMCE5), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVPK30) as stabilizers, along with trehalose and octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) modified starch were used as the wall material to produce Res microcapsules (Res-mcs) via spray drying. The fresh-prepared Res-ncs and rehydrated Res-mcs had mean particle sizes of 190.30 ± 3.43 and 204.70 ± 3.60 nm, zeta potentials of -13.90 ± 0.28 and - 11.20 ± 0.34 mV, and the loading capacities (LC) were as high as 73.03 % and 28.83 %. Particle morphology showed that Res-mcs had more regular and smooth spherical structures. FTIR indicated that Res may have hydrogen bonding with the walls. XRD and DSC exhibited that Res in nanocrystals and microcapsules existed mostly as amorphous structures. The solubility of Res-mcs and Res-ncs was increased, with excellent redispersibility and rapid dissolution of Res in vitro. The antioxidant properties of Res-mcs were protected and improved. With the walls acting as a physical barrier, Res-mcs have better photothermal stability than raw Res. Res-mcs have a relative bioavailability of 171.25 %, which is higher than that of raw Res.

Triadimefon is ubiquitous in various environmental media. Although toxicity of triadimefon to individual of aquatic organisms has been confirmed, its effect on organisms at population level remain poorly understood. In this study the long-term effect of triadimefon on individual and population of Daphnia magna were studied using multi-generational experiments and matrix model. Development and reproduction of three generations of F1 and F2 were significantly inhibited with the triadimefon concentration of 0.1 mg/L (p < 0.01). Toxicity of triadimefon to the offspring was stronger than to the parent (p < 0.05). When triadimefon concentration was higher than 0.1 mg/L, both population number and intrinsic rate of increase showed a decreasing trend with the increasing exposure concentration. Age structure of the population also tended to decline. Toxicity threshold derived on population-level was between mortality-based LC50 and reproduction-based NOEC of Daphnia magna, and also between acute toxicity and chronic toxicity derived from species sensitivity distribution (SSD). The risk of population level derived from risk quotient was low for most areas, and the results derived from probability risk showed that the expected loss of intrinsic rate of increase of population was 0.0039 without considering other factors. Compared to the individual-level, the ecological risks at the population level were closer to the actual situation of the ecosystem response to the chemical pollution.

Pharmaceuticals in freshwater posed ecological risks to aquatic ecosystem, however, most risk assessments of pharmaceuticals were conducted at screening level, which were limited by the availability of the toxicity data. In this study, risks of 80 pharmaceuticals including 35 antibiotics, 13 antiviral drugs, 13 illicit drugs, and 19 antidepressants in surface water of Beijing were assessed with a proposed multilevel environmental risk optimization strategy. Target pharmaceuticals were detected in surface water samples with the detection frequency from 1.7 % to 100 % and the total concentrations from 31.1 ng/L to 2708 ng/L. Antiviral drugs were the dominant pharmaceuticals. Preliminary screening-level risk assessment indicated that 20 pharmaceuticals posed low to high risks with risk quotient from 0.14 (chloroquine diphosphate) to 27.8 (clarithromycin). Thirteen pharmaceuticals were recognized with low to high risks by an optimized risk assessment method. Of them, the refined probabilistic risk assessment of joint probability curves coupling with a quantitative structure activity relationship-interspecies correlation estimation (QSAR-ICE) model was applied. Clarithromycin, erythromycin and ofloxacin were identified to pose low risks with maximum risk products (RP) of 1.23 %, 0.41 % and 0.35 %, respectively, while 10 pharmaceuticals posed de minimis risks. Structural equation modeling disclosed that human land use and climate conditions influenced the risks of pharmaceuticals by indirectly influencing the concentrations of pharmaceuticals. The results indicated that the multilevel strategy coupling with QSAR-ICE model was appropriate and effective for screening priority pollutants, and the strategy can be used to prioritize pharmaceuticals and other emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment.

BACKGROUND: To analyze the diversity in endoscopic manifestations of Meckel's diverticulum (MD) in adults by using balloon-assisted enteroscopy (BAE) and supply more information on the application of BAE. METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out on adult patients diagnosed with MD by BAE in two tertiary general hospitals in China, from May 2007 to September 2021. The patients were divided into a small bowel bleeding (SBB) group and a control group according to their main symptoms. Clinical charts and endoscopic images were reviewed, analyzed, and summarized. RESULTS: Single diverticulum in the ileum and double-lumen sign were observed in all patients. The SBB group consisted of 51 patients, among which 35 cases of ulcerative lesions, 9 cases of erosive lesions, 9 cases of active bleeding/blood clots, and 4 cases of lumps inside the diverticulum were observed respectively. Majority of ulcerative lesions were inside the diverticulum (23/35). A circumferential stricture inside the diverticulum was discovered in 11 cases, and ulcerative lesions tended to occur at this structure (10/11). In the control group consisting of 15 patients, 1 case of erosive lesions at the orifice edge was observed. The percentage of patients with MD-associated ulcerative lesions was significantly higher in the SBB group than that in the control group (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The endoscopic manifestations of MD in adults are extraordinarily complex and connected with the patients' primary symptoms. The internal features of MD should be regarded as crucial observational objectives in adult patients.
